Susan Lloyd-Selby
Labour County Candidate for Buttrills

I’m Susan Lloyd-Selby, one of your candidates for the Buttrills Ward of the Vale of Glamorgan.
I was born in Cadoxton and apart from a few years away in Aberystwyth University, I’ve lived here all my life. I live in the Buttrills ward and am very proud to be a Barry girl.
I work for a national anti-poverty charity supporting food banks in Wales and I set up the Vale food bank 10 years ago to support local people in crisis. When I’m not at work, I enjoy gardening, walking and drinking tea with friends as well as representing Buttrills on the Town Council, following my election in 2017.
I’m passionate about helping to make the Vale a fairer, more prosperous and greener place for everyone.
I’ve always been someone who is active in my community, developing and supporting a number of community projects to help people across the Vale, including the food bank, the Big Wrap (children’s Christmas gifts) and Baby Basics (starter packs for new mums). I’m a charity trustee and active member of a local church and personally, being able to represent Buttrills as a Labour Councillor would be a natural extension of my faith and my personal values. I believe politicians should ‘walk the walk’ not just ‘talk the talk’.
I spent over 20 years working for local government supporting people with disabilities and in my role as a town councillor I’ve been a member of a number of committees, including Finance & Policy, Fair Trade and Sustainable Barry. I’m particularly proud of the work we’ve done to provide grant funding to small local businesses and community groups to help them recover from the pandemic and believe my experience in local government and as a town councillor will help me hit the ground running in tackling the issues that matter to people in Buttrills.
I’m married with two adult children and having lived here all my life I’ve seen the difference a Labour Council can make, from investment in housing for people with disabilities and parks for our children to re-generating Barry Island and developing a programme of fantastic events to encourage tourism.
I know times are hard and there are real challenges ahead. More needs to be done to tackle poverty and to re-generate the town centre as well as supporting local businesses and community organisations. I believe a Labour Council can deliver a fairer and more prosperous future for people across the Vale.
