Mark Wilson
Labour County Candidate for Stanwell
I am proud to once again to stand for Stanwell Ward. I am a college lecturer and have lived in Penarth for over 25 years. I am also a school governor of two local primary schools and recognise the excellent education provision within the area. I am the town council representative on the Plastic free Penarth campaign which has been active in reducing the number of disposable plastics. I am also chair of Penarth Fair Trade Forum and am proud of the new road signs that saying Penarth is a Fairtrade town. I also help to manage Glyndwr Community Centre, I have been secretary since 2004, this community centre has gone from strength to strength and has seen improvements such as a new roof, a new floor and hopefully Wi-fi will be made available. I also assist at the Food Pod in the ward and this has helped some people manage their budgets better, in the face of the cost of living crisis .
I am standing again because I am still passionate about Penarth and would like to see more regeneration of our amazing town, we face some challenges, housing is one of them and we need to provide more affordable accommodation in the town. People must be encouraged to shop locally, and the provision of local public transport is a way in which that can happen. I am passionate about the local environment and have been delighted by the community group and their work in Victoria Square which has encouraged more biodiversity. I would like to see more work on the management of trees and pavements as well.
For a number of years I have been requesting improvements to our play areas and have pursued this with the relevant cabinet members, so I am delighted that there will be a significant upgrade of the play area adjacent to St David’s Crescent, £120,000 has been allocated for this purpose. I will continue to pursue improved play equipment in Victoria Playing Fields.
I know that the council is improving pavements along Stanwell Road and this needs to be done in more areas around Penarth, I will further campaign for this. More road resurfacing is needed , over the last 5 years we have seen new road surfacing, in Cornerswell Road, Stanwell Road, Victoria Road, Baron Road, Countess Place, Baroness Road and Cedar Way, If you think that there is another road that needs resurfacing within the ward , please let me know.
If re-elected, I will continue to be an advocate for people’s concerns and will campaign to make sure that Stanwell Ward has its fair share of its funds and resources
